Estate of Chadwick Boseman Complicated by Lack of Will

When he passed away earlier this year, actor Chadwick Boseman was apparently one of the many Americans who die without having executed a will.

From USA Today:

The wife of "Black Panther" star Chadwick Boseman is seeking to be appointed administrator of the estate of the beloved actor, who died in August at the age of 43.

Boseman, who died Aug. 28 after a four-year battle with colon cancer, died without a will, with an estate with an estimated value of $938,500, according to papers filed in Los Angeles County probate court Thursday and obtained by USA TODAY.

Boseman is not alone. One recent survey found that although 60% of Americans believed estate planning was important, only 32% reported having a will.

Regardless of your age and your assets, it’s important to take the time to consider your estate plans. Without a will, for example, state law - not your wishes - controls how your assets are distributed after death. Likewise, a judge would determine who should serve as guardian for your minor child - and that might be a different person than whom you would choose.
