Columbus to Consider Changes to Short-Term Rental Regulations

After numerous complaints of noisy and crowded gatherings at short-term rentals, Columbus property owners could face additional restrictions affecting their properties for rent on AirBnB, VRBO, and other platforms.

From the Columbus Dispatch:

The Columbus City Council is considering tightening rules governing short-term rentals after continuing complaints of loud parties and overcrowding during the coronavirus pandemic through the summer.

“During the pandemic, more of these issues have been cropping up in neighborhoods,” Councilman Rob Dorans said. Most operators have run their businesses responsibly, he said. But there have been several high-profile incidents.

As of August 2020, 1,078 short-term rentals had been registered with the city. Changes to the municipal ordinance could include limiting the number of rental nights per year or requiring the rental to be the owner’s primary residence. The City Council is expected to hold hearings later this year.

These proposals are yet another reminder that this area of the law is changing rapidly. Before listing your house as a short-term rental, it is essential to determine whether your municipality requires registration, owner background checks, or other formalities.
