What’s New?

Super Bowl (TM) LV

Ever wondered why references to next week’s championship football game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Kansas City Chiefs avoid certain words?

From last year’s blog:

Sunday's championship football game will bring all sorts of references: "The Big Game", "The Professional Football Championship Game", "The Be All End All of Football Games", and even "The Superb Owl". But why?

Over the years, the NFL has taken aggressive steps to protect its trademarks. (In 2015, for example, the league opposed a trademark application for the phrase “Souper Bowl” which was to be used on a variety of soups.) As a result, businesses try to talk about Sunday's big event in other ways.

Our recommendation to businesses has not changed. Enjoy the game - but don’t imply that you have any rights to use the National Football League’s trademark for “Super Bowl”.
